Rose For The Lady

Rose For The Lady

Took my girl out to dinner
The best place I could afford
The soup was barely in her
When she said Neil I'm bored
I was trying to tell her
A witty anecdote
When an odd little fellow
Interrupted my joke
Singing

"Rose for the lady, sir, rose for the lady
Don't let your wallet be closed for the lady
Roses and ladies should never be apart"
I said, "No, that's a cliche too far"
Later on in her car we got "Close, but no cigar"

Took my girl to the funfair
Said: "Let's go for a ride
Through the tunnel of love, dear
I want to see inside"
I was trying to tell her
I'd meant no double entendre
When that odd little fellow
Came by waving his wand
Singing

"Rose for the lady, sir, rose for the lady
Not just any old flower goes for the lady
Roses and ladies should never be apart"
I said, "No, how old fashioned you are"
Later when it got dark we got "Close, but no cigar"

I took my girl down to Paris
For a stroll by the Seine
I tried not to embarrass
Myself over again
But while kneeling to tell her
Of my eternal love
The sound of the rose seller
Drifted down from above
He sang:

"Rose for the lady, sir, rose for the lady
Don't go proposing with overgrown daisies
Roses and ladies should never be apart"
I cried: "Yes, old man, how right you are"
I'll take two dozen of flowers"
She said: "Take me to a bar"

I said: "Pourquoi?"
"To buy a huge cigar!"
