Grandad, Paw Paw, John Pop & Mr. Pete

Grandad, Paw Paw, John Pop & Mr. Pete

Of all the songs that I've written
This one means the most to me
I, uh, I wrote it about my granddaddies
I've had a Paw Paw, a graddaddy
And then, I grew up next-door to an old man that I call John Pop

And then, when I went off to college
Across the street from where we lived
I met this old man named Mr. Pete
And when we'd go out on the road honky-tonking
My dog Haggard, yes, I have a dog named Haggard
He would get out of the yard and Mr. Pete would always
Get him and put him in his backyard 'til we got back on Sunday

And I got to know Mr. Pete real well
And he was so much like my granddaddies
Which was so neat because all my granddaddies had already passed away
And there was always just a big hole in my heart
I wasn't ready to give them up yet

So having Mr. Pete was a pretty neat thing
We drank a lot of coffee, and we talked about
Women and fishing and golf, baseball, politics
Stuff like that

But the thing I admire most about all those old men
And Mr. Pete passed away the day before my first son was born
The thing that I hold dear to me now that they've gone
Is their strong faith in God

I bet they're up there watching us right here in Waco, Texas
What do you say?
I wrote this song for 'em, so won't you help me sing it to 'em?
It's called "Barbed Wire Halo"
