The Doorbells Are Ringing

The Doorbells Are Ringing

The last little fledgling flew away
From outside my window
Doves nested throughout the seasons kept me company all year
Oh, how I hated to see my last little friend go
And my friend's little brother died
He left a widow and three children behind
Covid is taking so, so many
As if last year it didn't take plenty
Yesterday was nice, driving down the one
Past Pacifica and Farmer John's Pumpkin Farm
Past [?] and Roosevelt Beach
Was nice going down memory lane
Seeing signs for Redwood City
And [?] and Frenchman's Creek
And Poplar and Moss Beach
On the way to Pescadero, craving green chili soup
The windows down, the wind is blowing
It feels so nice to be with you
We used to always drive down the one
When we first met, oh, how it's been so long
Driving along the Pacific Ocean to the west
Things feel so new again

I'm rediscovering my love for you
Two years off has given me a brand new
Perspective and a brand new view
Being home's been an adventure
Miracles happen: my home in the woods didn't catch fire
And my place in New Orleans didn't get flooded by Ida
And I'm walking more than ever
I'm thinking with my head, feeling good things in my heart
It's like a brand new start, your long black hair
Is as beautiful as ever
And your dark brown eyes are like jewelry
Your wisdom, a deep treasure
When we got to Pescadero, the electric was out
But we had a laugh about, it was nice to get out
It was a nice drive home, taking in the views to the left and the right
It was nice getting home and making love to you at night
To feel your soft skin, to taste your sweet lips
We've got to take more, more of these road trips
The Monterey cypresses along the ocean
The little coastal towns, the redwoods, the craftsmen's, the stucco ranch style houses
The tidepools, the seagull rocks, the fishing gear
Guys fishing for salmon and stripers
I wanna live the rest of my life with you here

Every night I dream of the last little fledgling
Every night I dream, you say I wake up singing
I hear the doorbells ringing, the doorbells are ringing
The doorbells are ringing
Every night I dream of the last little fledgling
Every night I dream, you say you hear me singing
I hear the doorbells ringing, the doorbells are ringing
The doorbells are ringing
